Sony DSLR Vs.Nikon-Which is Best?

Digital single-lens reflex, or DSLR, cameras are professional-level digital cameras that are superior in quality to compact cameras. Nikon and Sony have their own DSLR models that should be carefully compared before purchasing.

Resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels that are used to capture an image, measured by a camera's effective pixels. Sony generally advertises higher megapixel count than Nikon on comparable models. For example, the Sony A350 has 14.2 million pixels compared to the Nikon D80, which has 10.2 million pixels. This results in Sony cameras providing a slightly larger and more detailed image.

Performance

The downside of the larger image size in the Sony camera becomes apparent in its performance. The larger image size creates a burden on the memory, slowing down the camera's speed at taking shots in quick succession as well as saving shots to the memory card. The Nikon has slightly smaller images and lower resolution, but its performance does not suffer.

Lens Quality

The resolution is better in the Sony cameras, but the entry-level lenses do not provide the sharpness necessary to realize the difference. The Nikon lens that is packaged with the camera provides optics that are capable of representing the imaging capabilities of the camera. When directly compared, the Nikon produces sharper images.

Other Features

Both cameras provide multiple shooting modes, flash controls and comparable ISO and shutter speed settings. However, Nikon performs better in low light, has better light metering and provides a better viewfinder.

Price

Nikon cameras generally are more expensive than Sony models. However, they are generally higher in quality and performance.
